The National Centre for Roma Culture supported the achievement of a CD of traditional Roma music named “Romani Kultura”. The songs belong to and are performed by Mahala Rai Banda. Besiede their well-known songs, there are also new songs in Romani. The troupe’ members who speak Romani in their majority, got an exceptional rhythmic combination on texts written by Univ. Lecturer Dr. Delia Grigore. The troupe leader, Aurel Ionita, said that “…the same songs performed in other language lose their authenticity, do not create the same feeling, and do not covibrate the same way with the souls of the audience”.

About MAHALA RAI BANDA

The band plays with an array of styles and genres. Romanian violins & accordions are combined with a brass section consisting of army brass band veterans and musicians from Romania’s famous village Zece Prajini – hometown of Fanfara Ciocarlia and a rocking rhythm section. They effortlessly combine a knack for inventive arrangements with an ability to turn every concert into a wild party.

Their music is positioned right at the crossroads between traditional popular music and club-oriented, so called Balkan Beats. This rich blend of sophisticated arrangements, traditional elements and modern outlook puts them in a unique position among all the current bands.
