“FROM VICTIMIZATION TO CITIZEN CONSCIOUSNESS: PATH FOR ROMA INTEGRATION”

Cartea – De la victimizare la constinta… – download

Some Roma and non-Roma thinkers from the European Roma movement, especially sogiologists, political scientists and activists, including Nicolae Gheorghe, Andras Biro and Martin Kovats, had in mind to discuss concepts and visions which are vital for Roma contemporary identity, such as: Roma cultural values within the European modern framework; reforming systems of Roma ethnic identity; potential roles and consecquences of Roma activism; elaboration of policies for Roma; integration and politicization of Roma identity; opportunities for the development of Roma identity within an enlarged Europe.

In addition to its concept of Roma identity, Nicolae Gheorghe’s text provides the reader with information on terms that we very often meet in the speech on Roma; a good example is the term “romanized Gypsy”: “In the 1930s (…) an ardent debate has focused on the disputable status of Jews and Roma. To demonstrate legitimacy someone could apply to the Special Committee for the Romanization in order to obtain a document certifying the holder’s full membership to the Romanian society. From that moment forward a new legal category is introduced: “the Romanized Gypsies – Gypsies who became Romanian or assimilated”.

The book is divided into various topics such as: About tricks and ”gypsy hickory”, “The Ethics of work and the role of Roma leaders”, “Travellers of the European Union?”, “Historical backgrounds and ‘Europeanisation’ of Roma issues”, “Travellers, Nomad, voyagers and Roma in Europe”, “Churches and sects”, “Bureaucratization and perspectives of re-mobilization”.
